Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering creates firm foundations for Marble Arch Place

10 August 2017

UK

Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering, one of the UK’s leading specialist geotechnical contractors, is making significant progress with piling works at Marble Arch Place. The contract for Multiplex will provide foundations for Almacantar’s 18-storey residential tower and seven-storey commercial building overlooking Hyde Park in London.

With site preparation work now complete, Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering has just started to construct the 110 piles required, which are up to 43m in length. These act as structural columns to provide the towers' solid foundations.

Work on the 278 metre diaphragm wall, the underground structure designed to retain soil and support heavy loads from above, will begin shortly, leading to the creation of a new 22m deep basement.

The project is utilising the skills of 35 expert engineers, including three graduates and an apprentice.

Malcolm O’Sullivan, Managing Director for Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering, said:

"Marble Arch Place presents Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering with a technically challenging but exciting project. Among the challenges are historic foundations in the form of 39 piles from the 1960's building which previously stood on the site and must be removed. Five of these are 1.8m in diameter; some of the biggest in the UK. We're utilising the latest equipment and our expertise to ensure their removal and our subsequent works run smoothly."

Preparatory work at Marble Arch Place commenced in June 2017 with the ground engineering works due for completion in early 2018 and the project due to complete in 2020.
