Balfour Beatty awarded £49 million Retail and Leisure Development Scheme in Cheshire

7 August 2014

UK

Balfour Beatty’s UK construction business today announces the award of a £49 million contract for a town centre retail and leisure development in Northwich, Cheshire.

The 40,000m2 Barons Quay scheme for Cheshire West and Chester Council will involve the construction of seven buildings in Northwich town centre which will contain more than thirty retail units including shops, restaurants and a multi-screen cinema. High profile retail tenants will include Asda and Odeon Cinemas.

The redevelopment project underpins the Council’s regeneration and growth plans for Northwich. Balfour Beatty will work closely with the local council, a local social enterprise company and Job Centre Plus to provide 50 jobs and more than 100 training and apprenticeship opportunities for local people.

Extensive public realm improvements will include high quality granite paving, steps and benches incorporating feature LED lighting throughout. Sustainable measures include roof-mounted photovoltaic solar panels which will provide more than 10% of the retail scheme’s electricity needs.

Nicholas Pollard, Balfour Beatty Construction Services UK Chief Executive Officer said:  “We are delighted to work with Cheshire West and Chester Council to deliver a scheme that will help regenerate Northwich town centre and provide jobs and opportunities for local people and businesses.  Our commitment to building sustainably, engaging with local stakeholders and employing a local supply chain is key to our success; we aim to leave a lasting legacy as a thoughtful contractor behind us.”

Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering will be responsible for piling works with Balfour Beatty Engineering Services delivering the mechanical and electrical engineering works.

Works will commence in autumn 2014 and the scheme is due for completion in winter 2016.
